How to save money fast: a three-to-six-month plan

You can only save fast for something specific. «More money» does not last beyond two weeks.

In short

To save money fast, set an amount and a date, divide the amount by the months and move it to a separate account on payday. The money comes from three places: cutting big costs (housing, transport, subscriptions), selling things you no longer use, and extra income while you save. Small cuts help less than they seem: over a short period, big sums decide it.

«Fast» usually means three to six months: for a trip, a move, a repair, rebuilding an emergency fund after a hit. Over that span the coffee advice does not work: you need a sum that can only be gathered in big steps.

Step 1. Amount and date

The amount divided by the months is the plan. 3 000 in six months is 500 a month. If the number looks impossible, move the date now rather than give up in month two.

Step 2. Where the money comes from

Big costs

Housing, transport, subscriptions, phone

Cut once, save every month

Selling things

Electronics, clothes, what sits unused

A lump sum at the start

Extra income

Side jobs, overtime, gigs

For as long as you save

A pause

A month without non-essentials

A quick start

Small daily spending adds up too, but over three months it yields little. More on it: small daily spending.

Step 3. Save first

Move the amount on payday, not at the end of the month. If you wait to see what is left, nothing will be: spending always stretches to whatever is on the card.

Step 4. Protect what you saved

  • Keep the money in a separate account you do not see on your everyday card.
  • Do not use a credit card to cover costs «for now»: that is saving on credit.
  • Decide in advance what counts as an emergency and what does not.

How to go faster

  • A month without non-essentials gathers the first sum quickly and shows how much was going nowhere: no-spend challenge.
  • Every windfall goes to the goal: bonuses, tax refunds, cash gifts.
  • A raise goes to the goal: if income rises while you save, the difference goes there too.

How it looks in the app

In Caudal create a goal with an amount and a date: the app works out how much to put aside each month and recalculates after every contribution — fall behind and the amount rises, get ahead and it drops. The goal's money sits in its own account and stays out of the forecast of how long your money lasts, so you cannot spend it by accident. And the main screen shows what you can spend today with the saving already taken off. How to save when there is no deadline: how to save money.

Common questions

How can I save money in a month?
In a month you can raise money from three places: selling things you do not use, a month without non-essential spending, and any extra income. Move all of it to a separate account straight away, without waiting for the month to end.
How much can I save in six months?
Whatever you put aside each month times six, plus any one-off income. Start backwards: the sum you need divided by six is your monthly amount. If it does not fit the budget, cut big fixed costs or move the date.
Which is faster, cutting costs or earning more?
Over a short period the combination works: cutting big fixed costs frees money every month and extra income adds on top. Small cuts help but rarely solve it alone.
