How to save for a vacation: amount and timeline
A vacation on credit ends twice: first on the beach, then months later with the last payment.
In short
To save for a vacation, work out its full cost: travel, accommodation, a daily food budget times the number of days, activities, insurance and a ten percent buffer. Divide that by the months until you leave and move it to a goal of its own on payday. Book flights and accommodation early — it is cheaper — but only once the money for them is there.
A vacation is the perfect savings goal: a specific amount, a known date and a reward that is easy to picture. The usual mistake lies elsewhere: counting only the flights and the hotel.

Food and small spending at the destination are often a third of the trip, and they are exactly what gets left out.
How much to save each month
The amount minus what you have, divided by the months until you go. A 3 600 trip in nine months is 400 a month. If it does not fit, move one of three things: the date, the destination or the length.
Where the biggest savings are
- Dates. Travelling off-season and midweek costs far less.
- Booking early. Flights and accommodation booked months ahead are usually cheaper — once the money is saved.
- A kitchen. Breakfasts and a few dinners in cut the most underestimated line.
How to save
Set the money aside on payday, not at the end of the month. Keep it apart from your everyday card. Everything unexpected — bonuses, refunds, gifts — goes to the trip: the goal arrives sooner than planned.
On the trip
The money is saved; now do not overspend it. Divide the total by the days of the trip and watch the daily amount rather than the overall balance. How to track spending abroad and in another currency: tracking spending on a trip abroad.
How it looks in the app
In Caudal create a «Vacation» goal with an amount and a date: the app works out how much to set aside each month and recalculates after every contribution. You can attach a photo of where you are going: a goal you can see is dropped less often. On the trip, an account in the local currency helps — spending is recorded in it, with no converting in your head, and voice entry comes in handy when your hands are full.

Common questions
- How much money should I save for a vacation?
- The full cost: travel, accommodation, food for every day, activities, insurance and a ten percent buffer. Food and small spending at the destination are often a third of the trip; do not leave them out.
- How far ahead should I start saving for a vacation?
- The earlier, the lighter each month and the cheaper the tickets. Six to nine months ahead is comfortable: the amount splits into manageable parts, and you can book flights and accommodation early, once the money is saved.
- Should I put a vacation on credit?
- Better not: interest makes the trip dearer, and the payments continue long after you are home. If the money is short, it is healthier to move the date, choose somewhere closer or shorten the trip.
