Loan or interest-free instalments: which is really cheaper

Instalments sound like a gift and a loan sounds like a commitment. In practice the gap is often smaller than it looks.

2026-10-03

In short

A genuinely interest-free instalment plan is cheaper than a loan: you pay the price and nothing on top. But the cost is often hidden — in a price higher than paying upfront, in add-on insurance, or in late fees. Example: a laptop costs 1 200 upfront; 12 instalments of 110 come to 1 320, more than a one-year loan at fifteen percent (1 300). Compare the total of all payments with the upfront price, not the words "0% interest".

"Loan or instalments?" usually gets asked at the checkout, when the decision is almost made. It is worth asking earlier — and comparing amounts, not labels.

How they differ

Instalments

You pay the price in parts

No interest, or the shop pays it

Loan

A lender gives you money with interest

The cost is interest over the term

In common

Both are debt

A monthly payment for months ahead

Both are debt. Instalments take up room in your budget too, and many plans are reported to credit bureaus just like a loan.

Where the cost hides

  • A higher price than paying upfront: no cash discount, and the instalment price includes what the shop pays the lender.
  • Add-ons — insurance, protection plans or fees switched on by default.
  • Late payments: one missed instalment can bring a fee, and with deferred-interest offers, all the interest from day one.

A worked example

Upfront

1 200

No extra cost

12 instalments of 110

1 320

120 extra, hidden in the price

One-year loan at 15%

1 300

Payment 108, interest 100

Instalments with a mark-up can cost as much as a loan, or more. A genuine plan — 12 payments of 100 — really is free, as long as you are never late.

How to choose

  1. Ask for the upfront price and compare it with the sum of all payments.
  2. Check what else is attached to the agreement besides the purchase.
  3. See whether your budget can take the new payment on top of the existing ones: debt-to-income ratio.
  4. If neither option fits without the credit card at the end of the month, save instead. It is usually only a few months: how much to save each month for a big purchase.

The real risk: several plans at once

One instalment plan is harmless. Five are five payments that are easy to forget until they land in the same week. How to see what you already owe next month: interest-free instalments.

How it looks in the app

In Caudal instalment plans and loans go in Debts with a monthly payment and a day of the month. The app adds up all the payments and includes them in the "how long your money lasts" forecast on the home screen, and each payment is recorded with Make a payment — the balance updates itself. So a new plan shows up in the budget before you sign it: just look at how the forecast would change.

Common questions

Is a loan or an instalment plan cheaper?
A genuinely interest-free plan is cheaper: you pay only the price. But if the instalment price is higher than paying upfront, or insurance is added, the cost can match or exceed a loan. Compare the total of all payments with the upfront price.
Does an instalment plan count as debt?
Yes. It is a payment committed for months ahead, many providers report it to credit bureaus, and it counts towards your debt-to-income ratio like any other debt.
What happens if I miss an instalment payment?
Usually a late fee, and sometimes the loss of the interest-free terms — with deferred-interest offers, interest can be charged back to the start. A missed payment can also hurt your credit history, so keep the due dates in front of you.
