Christmas budget: gifts and holidays without debt
December is the most expensive month of the year, but it is no surprise. It can be paid for in advance.
In short
A Christmas budget is made in advance: a total for the holidays, a gift list with a price next to every name, food, travel and outings, plus a ten percent buffer. Divide the total by the months left until December and save it in a goal of its own. Do not put the holidays on a credit card: January is long enough already.
Holiday spending is built from many small decisions, each modest on its own. In January it turns out the season cost as much as a vacation and payday is still two weeks away. The defence is working it all out beforehand.

A gift list with prices
List everyone you plan to give to and, next to each, an amount. Not «something nice» — a number. Add them up and compare with what you are willing to spend. If it does not fit, cutting the amount per person is easier than cutting the list: a Secret Santa at work and one gift from the whole family save the most.
When to start saving
As soon as you have the figure. With three months to December and holidays costing 900, that is 300 a month. The earlier you start, the lighter each month. Another trick: buy gifts gradually, as good options turn up, not all in the last week.
January
The season runs into early January, and spending continues the whole time. Some employers also pay December early, which stretches the gap to the next paycheck. Set money aside for January separately, so the holidays do not eat the money for living. If a bonus arrives in December, how to use it: what to do with a year-end bonus.
What not to do
- Do not put gifts on a credit card hoping to «clear it in January».
- Do not buy on the last day: that is when people spend more, on things they did not need.
- Do not let sales become an excuse: a discount on something you did not plan is spending, not saving.
How it looks in the app
In Caudal create a «Christmas» goal with an amount and a date: the app works out how much to set aside each month. Big gifts fit well in the «Wishlist» with a price and a month — the app works out how much to save and tells you whether it fits the budget. Record holiday spending in a gifts and holidays category with a limit, and the app warns you as it runs out. In January the report shows what the holidays really cost — useful next year. Common questions
- How much should I save for Christmas?
- Add up your gift list with prices, food for several days, outings and travel, and add a ten percent buffer. Divide the total by the months left until December: that is your monthly amount.
- How can I spend less on Christmas gifts?
- Cut the amount per person rather than the list: a Secret Santa at work, one gift from the whole family, homemade presents. And buy gradually through the autumn, not in the last week, when prices are higher and choice is poorer.
- How do I get through January after the holidays?
- Set money aside for January before the holidays: spending carries on into the new year and the next paycheck can feel far away. If December's pay arrived early, split it across two months.
